A to Z of MS Expert Patients Programme
The Expert Patient Programme is a free six week course for people with chronic or long-term conditions. The course is delivered by trained and accredited tutors, most of whom are themselves living with a long-term health condition.
The Programme aims to give people the confidence to take more responsibility and self-manage their health and to be active participants in the treatment, management and care of their condition. Rather than focussing on health information about specific conditions, the course looks at general topics include healthy eating, dealing with pain and extreme tiredness, relaxation techniques and coping with feelings of depression.
Young people
Staying Positive workshops are designed by and for 12 to 18 year olds in England living with a long-term condition. Topics covered include the impact on social life, relationships and education as well issues such as exercise, mood and nutrition.
Carers
In England there is also an Expert Patient course called Looking After Me. This is a free course for people who care for someone living with a long-term health condition or disability. There are also courses for young carers and for parents and guardians of children with life-long or life-limiting health conditions.
