A to Z of MS Hearing problems

Hearing loss or deafness as a result of MS is not a common symptom. Some people find that they experience some worsening of hearing during a relapse, but this usually improves once the relapse is over.

Other hearing problems that can occur include the difficulty in discriminating speech against a noisy background or heightened sensitivity to noise (hyperacusis).

Hearing problems caused by MS are thought to be due to damage to the brainstem - the part of the brain that is also involved in vision and balance. Problems are often associated with other brainstem symptoms such as tinnitus and vertigo.

Because hearing deficits are uncommon in MS, people who do develop problems should have their hearing thoroughly evaluated to rule out other causes.
