A gift in your will

Margaret Grebby

I have decided to remember the MS Trust in my will because I had such help from them following my diagnosis in 2004.

- Margaret, MS Trust supporter

Every week, 100 people in the UK are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). A gift in your will to the MS Trust could help us to provide them with the information and support they need to face a lifelong and uncertain journey.

Making a will is the safest way to ensure that your wishes are carried out after you have passed away. By making a will you can ensure that your loved ones and the causes you care about are provided for. If you don't have an up to date will, the courts will have to administer your affairs after you die.

Having a will in place makes life easier for those left behind, and helps eliminate misunderstandings. If you have children, you can safeguard their future by providing for them financially and, where necessary, appointing a legal guardian. With your solicitor's help you might also be able to minimise the inheritance tax payable on your estate.

By leaving a legacy gift to the MS Trust, you can help us to reach out to more people with MS who will need our information and support in the future.

Writing your will

A will is a legal document and must comply with legal formalities. For this reason we strongly recommend that you ask a solicitor to help you write one. If you intend to leave a gift in your will to the MS Trust, we suggest you have the following wording to hand when speaking to your solicitor:

I give to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust of Spirella Building, Bridge Road, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, SG6 4ET, Registered Charity number 1088353, _________________ and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other authorised officer, shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge.

You can find a solicitor near you through the Law Society's website.

What if I have already made a will?

You can amend an existing will to include a gift to the MS Trust by asking your solicitor to add a codicil. To ensure that your intended gift does reach the MS Trust, please use the suggested wording above.

Our promise to you

If you have already included a donation to the MS Trust in your will, please accept our warmest thanks on behalf of all the people with multiple sclerosis your gift will help.

To help you feel even more confident about your decision, here are our six promises we make to people who are considering including the MS Trust in their will:

  • We will always respect your privacy
  • We realise that, rightly, your loved ones will always come first
  • Because we are committed to improving the lives of people with MS, we will always encourage people to leave something to the MS Trust. But we recognise that it's your decision and you need to make it in your own time
  • If you choose to tell us, you can decide how we communicate with you in the future
  • We will use your gift carefully and cost effectively so that it has the greatest impact for people with MS
  • We will handle whatever gift you leave us efficiently - and also with care, sensitivity and respect

In our imperfect world, where MS services are not adequate, people with MS will always need our information and support.

By leaving a gift in your will to the MS Trust you can help make sure we are always able to support people with MS.

If I have left a gift to the MS Trust, should I tell you?

We would love to know who our legacy pledgers are so that we can directly thank and acknowledge you for this incredibly kind gesture. You may even wish to request that donations are made at your funeral and gifted to the MS Trust. If you are able to let us know your intentions, we can better plan for the future. We will also keep you up to date with our work and be here for you whenever you need us to help deal with your queries or concerns about multiple sclerosis.
