Simple and tax free regular donations through your payroll

Did you know that if you donate £10 a month to the MS Trust from your pay, your gift will only cost you £7.80? The taxman gives us the extra £2.20! It will cost you even less if you are on higher rate tax.

For instance...

  • ...if you pledge to donate £5 each month
  • ...and you pay tax at the 22% rate, you will only pay £3.90
  • ...or if you pay tax at the 40% rate, you will pay just £3.00
  • ...the taxman will make up the difference

If you pledge to donate £20 a month, you will pay £15.60 (22% tax rate) or £12 (40% tax rate). Over the course of a year, your donation will be worth £240 to the MS Trust and will have cost you just £187.20 (22% tax rate) or £144 (40% tax rate)!

Setting up the scheme

If your company does not have a Payroll Giving scheme in place you will need to encourage them to set one up. It is very simple for an employer to organise, and it offers companies an excellent and tax efficient way to support their employees' personal charity choices.

There are Government grants available until December 2006 to companies with fewer than 500 employees, to ofset the costs of setting up a Payroll Giving scheme. Employers will receive a cash incentive of up to £500, and the first £10 donated by each employee, every month, will be matched by the Government for six months.

Tax efficient, direct and convenient

Payroll Giving is a tax efficient way of giving regularly to the MS Trust. It is one of the most direct and convenient ways of helping us support the 85,000 people with MS in the UK. Any employee or pensioner paid under Pay As You Earn can donate to the MS Trust in this way.

Giving direct from your payroll is very simple. All you need to do is decide how much you would like to give each pay day, complete the Give As You Earn application form, and return it to the MS Trust.
