Cycling the 3 Cities
Mel Plehov was the first person to take part in the 3 Cities Cycle Ride (from London to Brussels via Amsterdam) in support of the MS Trust. We asked her why she had chosen to support us in this way:
"I signed up for this ride having only ever used my bike to cycle to the shops and back. I remember when I was younger and my mum was first diagnosed with MS she'd often hold my hand and we'd run to places and when I asked why, she said, "Because I still can." So when I saw this advertised I thought it would be a great way to raise money for a charity that helps people like my mum, who suffer from and MS, and because, well...I can.
"For anyone thinking of signing up, but worried you won't be able to do it - this is exactly how I felt. I thought I'd be useless and get left behind, but that wasn't the case at all. Skyline (the tour operators) help you every step of the way starting with a training guide. The training helped me realise that once you start cycling, you can pretty much go for miles.
"Once I started the journey, I didn't have anything worry about. Everyone was so friendly and all of the riders were there for the same reason. We all helped each other along and I made some great friends. Skyline organised each day brilliantly with water stops and lunch. And there's plenty of time to stop for a cheeky pint or coffee on route. There were people who struggled, but Skyline had an amazing support team including a mechanic and support riders who were there to ride along and maybe even give you an encouraging push up the hill! The scenery and roads from London all the way to Brussels were beautiful, the Dutch cater especially well for bikes. The route was fairly flat and the biggest challenge was deciding which café to stop in!" Mel Plehov
