Drag Racers do it for the MS Trust!

Drag racers have been supporting the MS Trust since 2008, when Lorna Barter persuaded her friends and colleagues in the Supertwins team to do something for the MS Trust during MS Awareness Week.

All togged up MS Trust T-shirts, they revved, roared and raced; collected money and handed out leaflets about MS to the hundreds of people at Shakespeare County Raceway.

"One thing I know drag racers can do is get attention!" said Lorna. She was right about that: the track committee was so impressed that it adopted MS Trust as its charity of the year.

Supertwins

As a result of Lorna's enthusiasm many of the drag racers have continued to support the MS Trust at both Shakespeare County and Santa Pod Race Way, in particular fReQracing and Supertwins.

Karen Aston

In 2009, Karen Aston decided she wanted to do something different to raise funds for the MS Trust.

Karen said, "After a fantastic first visit to Santa Pod race way for the Easter Thunder Ball 2009, I was just so impressed. The sport, staff and facilities, especially for disabled people, were all fantastic. As someone that was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 15 years ago I then decided to see if I could, some how, get on the drag racing track too!

"Darren Prentice from Santa Pod Raceway in Northampton was only happy to help and kindly arranged a passenger thrill ride in Santa Pod's 2-Seater Dragster, at The Summer Nationals (14/6/2009). This incredible 9.8 litre racing dragster produces 1000 horse power! After my doctor gave the go ahead, there was no looking back. The ride was TRULY AMAZING and I was also blessed to have a top UK racing driver, Jon Webster and his team all looking after me before and after my 7 seconds of superb drag racing.

"Nitro FM, Santa Pod's radio station, was also so supportive and gave me an opportunity to talk about multiple sclerosis and the MS Trust, and to meet other top UK drag racing teams."

As a result of this first drag racing experience, Karen became hooked on drag racing and recognised, just like Lorna, that there were many people in the drag racing community who wanted to help raise the profile of MS and the MS Trust.

The MS Trust would like to thank Karen and the following list of people for everything they have done to help raise awareness of MS and the MS Trust:

  • Gary Page with The Mongoose Exhausts/Pennzoil Team
  • Les Harris and the Super Twins team
  • Nigel and Jules from Nitro FM and Black Cat Productions
  • Nigel Holland who donated some of his outstanding photographic images
  • The crews of Freddy's Revenge, Shock Wave, The Wild Bunch
  • Paul Venners

Team Edge - racing to raise awareness of MS

Following the incredible support already seen at Santa Pod for the MS Trust, Gordon Northway decided to combine his passion to support both the MS Trust and his love of drag racing and set up his own race team Team Edge. Gordon will be racing his car "The Edge" (pictured below), which is wrapped in the MS Trust logo.

The MS Trust would like to say a big thank you to Gordon and all the members of Team Edge for their support and wish them the best of luck for the 2010 season.

The Edge

Team Edge are being supported by Webster Race Engineering and Adrenaline Race & Performance to advance the vehicles' performance.

The FIA Main Event: 28th – 31st May 2010

Santa Pod Raceway

As a result of all of Karen's activities and the support of everyone at Santa Pod, the MS Trust has been chosen as the official charity for this special event in the drag racing calendar. This will be a fantastic weekend of fun and thrills for all the family and the MS Trust will be on site to meet people and thank the drag racing community for their support. We hope that we'll see some other MS Trust supporters there too!
