Interview with fundraisers Bev and Duncan Smith

Duncan and Bev Smith at their fundraising concert

Bev and Duncan Smith have been involved with the MS Trust since 2004. They have held coffee mornings, fundraising barbecues and a concert, and have raised almost £2,000 to support our work.

Why did you first get involved in fundraising for the MS Trust?

"MS Trust gave invaluable support when my wife was diagnosed with MS."

What has been your most successful fundraising event so far?

"Organising a musical concert that raised over £1,300."

What do you enjoy most about fundraising?

"Without fundraising, MS Trust would not be able to give others the support they gave us. We are pleased to be able to give a little back to help others."

Have you found that friends and family want to get involved with your fundraising?

"Friends who are affected by MS are willing helpers."

What has surprised you most during your fundraising endeavours?

"All our fundraising efforts have been well supported."

What have you found to be the most challenging thing about fundraising?

"Trying to gain the "edge" on other charities competing for an ever decreasing pot."

How have the MS Trust supported your fundraising efforts?

"Staff at MS Trust are so friendly and instil enthusiasm with all our fundraising efforts, which are backed up with promotional "goodies", literature and website publicity."

Do you have any suggestions for easy ways in which people can start to raise money?

"A coffee morning/afternoon is a great way to get started and to test local interest in MS without a large financial risk."

What advice would you give to someone who is trying to fundraise?

"Ask friends to support you. Tell them about the work of MS Trust. Have a look around for other local fundraising events and try not to clash dates. Choose a convenient venue. Advertise. Local newspapers, village magazines and local radio usually make no charge for advertising charity events."

Anything else to add?

"GIVE IT A GO!"
