Bowls is one of the oldest sports played today. It is a popular leisure activity that provides low impact, therapeutic exercise in a social atmosphere. Bowls can be played as singles, pairs, triples or foursomes. It is popular among wheelchair users, as people with varying abilities can play. Wheelchair bowlers can compete equally with able-bodied people, as the rules of the two games are the same. Modified turf-friendly wheels, buggies, mats, boards or ramps can be used to prevent damage to the greens.

The English Bowling Association provides a beginner’s guide to how the game is played. They also have details on how to find a local club.

The British Wheelchair Bowls Association can be contacted to help wheelchair users to get the most out of the game, whether they are just starting out or a more experienced bowler. They can give advice on:

  • access to greens and clubs
  • ramps and boards
  • wheelchairs, buggies and other equipment
