Baby, MS and Me Home

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Hellie and I’ll be your blogging host for the next few months. I’m not sure exactly what I’ll write about just yet. The plan is for it to be about my MS and my pregnancy, but I am sure other things will sneak in too.

So, some things about me. I’ve already told you my name – that ‘s a start. I’m originally from Sweden, but have lived in the UK for nearly 10 years now. These days I call Hertfordshire my home, but I lived in London for many years. I am 31 years old. I got married last year, and have been with Steve (my husband if you didn’t guess) for nearly 10 years. I work as a web editor, before that, I worked in various media/internet environments with job titles that seem to confuse people. My favorite of all time was “surfer”. I love the internet; I spend a huge part of my working life and spare time exploring it.

I guess I should talk a bit about my MS too. I was diagnosed in February 2007 – not very long ago really. I wasn’t a complete newbie to what it was, as my grandfather also had it. But as I have learnt since then, his type of MS was very different to mine. I first started having problems in the summer of 2006, so I was diagnosed rather quickly if you compare it to some people, who have to wait years for their diagnoses. I have had a few relapses, most of them sensory ones, with pain and pins and needles, and sometimes numbness in my right leg and later in my right arm. I have had a few turns of vertigo and the dizziness and nausea that it brings too. In October 2007 I went totally numb in the right side of my torso and suffered from the so called “MS Hug” , but since then (touch that famous wood) I haven’t had any problems.

And now I’m expecting my first child at the end of April. I’m very happy about it, but of course also very nervous! Since becoming pregnant I haven’t actually had many of my normal MS problems. Apart from the fatigue that is oh-so-common in pregnancy anyway, so far none of the tingling, pins and needles or numbness have reared their ugly heads. This is all very nice; I sometimes even forget I have MS, and have to remind myself that come April, the symptoms will probably come back. But so far so good!

Before I got pregnant, I had read a lot about what it would be like for a person with MS, so I knew that symptoms and relapses do tend to ease up during the nine months. I also knew that the chances of a relapse are higher in the months just after giving birth Not something to look forward to, but as we say in Sweden “That day, that sorrow”!

Anyway, I’d better stop now so I have something to write about in the next post. I’d like to point out that I am not an expert on MS – just a person who has it. So if you have any questions or worries about MS, the best place to turn is the MS Trust Information team!
