“The most natural thing”

12th July 2009 by Hellie

I have been thinking a lot of breastfeeding lately, not so strange maybe. But I think these last 8 weeks or so I have learnt more about it than I ever thought possible. Like how important it is to keep on feeding, even when you think there is no milk as it works as a supply and demand situation. Miss out on a feed or substitute it with a bottle and you are missing out on a demand and hence get less supply. I wish I fully would have understood this back in week 3 when I gave in to supplement with a bottle. (more…)

Week 7

11th June 2009 by Hellie

I really thought I’d have more time to update this blog! But I find I rarely have both hands for disposal. Tycho is tricky to get to settle in his basket during day time and often ends up sleeping on me, so I end up doing the one handed typing most of the time. He still hasn’t gained back his birth weight. It is now week 7 (!!!) and last week he weighed 3.55 kg, his birth weight was 3.7. He is getting weighed tomorrow…or rather today, as it is 3:15 am as I type this. I really hope he will have put something on, but I doubt it as we have tried standing on our bathroom scales with him to work out and weight gain, and if any it will only be a few grams. (more…)

Milk Vampire

3rd May 2009 by Hellie

It is 06.46 Sunday morning, we have just had a feed at 6 o’clock were Tycho really just wanted to sleep. Now i am downstairs expressing milk, to try and up my production. Tycho has lost a pound since birth and we have to feed him at least every 3 hours now. During the last few days I don’t think i have been sleeping more than maybe 1 or 2 hours. I guess people weren’t kidding when they say the first few months you’ll never sleep. This week if he doesn’t put on more weight we might have to think about adding formula to the feed too. I really don’t want to do this, so i do everything I can to feed him and get my own production going. (more…)

Breastfeeding

24th February 2009 by Hellie

No I won’t write an entry about the silly people that complain about this being done in public. I mean how dare women use their breasts for what they technically are meant for (that is feeding babies for you who weren’t sure)! Breasts are purely meant for page 3 and nothing else…*sigh*. We do live in a stupid world at times. Anyway someone alerted me to this piece of news, “Breastfeeding ‘can reduce chance of multiple sclerosis sufferers having a relapse’” which I think is very interesting. It just shows more and more the benefits of breastfeeding.
