Setting-up a support group for multiple sclerosis patients in Goole, East Yorkshire

Mandy Pape, MS Specialist Nurse, Hull Royal Infirmary

It was the Goole Hospital physiotherapy department that first came up with the idea for a support group for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). They had under review around 30 patients, of which there were around 12 seen on a monthly basis. However after the review locally by the physiotherapy department the group was unfortunately seen not to be cost effective enough and requested to close.

Although deemed not cost effective, it was clear that this support group was wanted by its members. Finding a way to continue the group and improve on its beginnings was important. A meeting was held with the MS specialist nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and the local branch of the MS Society to see what could be done. Through this collaboration of professionals and the determination of the group's members, it has now become a member managed support group with the support of professionals.

This poster describes how this MS support group was setup, and describes key factors in making it a success for its members, and the professionals that provide their support. It is hoped that the poster will help others by sharing our experience.
