Lodge J, Nurse Specialist in Bladder and Bowel Health, St Mary's Hospital, Leeds
It is a known fact to all health care professionals, that bowel problems manipulate patients' quality of life, socially, psychologically and physically. This is an influencing factor for patients rehabilitating from illness or learning to manage their bowels along with long term health problems such as multiple sclerosis. For those living with multiple sclerosis, good bowel management can be the difference between dependence on others and living in isolation, to being independent with or without support and an active member of society.
The aim of the seminar is:
- Brief overview of anatomy and physiology
- When to involve specialist services/discuss bowels with patients
- Assessment process what do we need to know to treat and manage
- Management and treatment of those with symptoms of constipation, including obstructive and slow transit, loose stools and episodes of incontinence, or mixed symptoms
