Keynote lectures:

The use of the internet to improve the patient experience will be the subject of a lecture by Professor Deborah Miller, Associate Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic. Individuals living with chronic illness are responsible for much of their own disease management. The Mellen Centre, Cleveland, Ohio has introduced an online patient management system that allows patients to monitor their MS symptoms.

What can we learn from IT usage in the USA and what will be possible in the UK? The implications of new technologies in symptom management for MS care and 'What is possible in the UK' will be explored by Bernie Porter, MS Nurse Consultant, National Hospital, London.

Stem cells

The current experience and future possibilities will be presented by Professor Neil Scolding from the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, an eminent specialist in this area. The properties of stem cells relating to MS and cell damage in the brain and the efforts to begin the clinical testing of stem cell therapies will be discussed.

A UK consensus on the management of the bladder in MS

Professor Clare Fowler from the National Hospital, will launch a new consensus on the management of the bladder for people with MS. The guidelines cover the management of the bladder from diagnosis to death. Professor Fowler will be joined by a Urologist, a continence advisor and an MS specialist nurse in a panel discussion.

Pathways and commissioning - the wider picture

Dr Steve Laitner, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, West Herts PCT, and the Long-term conditions lead for the East of England SHA will demonstrate the value of the MS commissioning pathway, and how to use commissioning to develop services.

Information zone

New in our 2008 conference is the Information Zone. This offers the unique opportunity for delegates to interact with a wide variety of organisations who offer support to people with Multiple Sclerosis and the health professionals who work with them.
