Our NHS, our future

In June 2007, the surgeon Lord Ara Darzi was appointed a health minister and charged with conducting 'Our NHS, our future', a review of NHS services in England. His brief was to carry out a wide-ranging review to ensure that a properly resourced NHS is clinically led, patient-centred and locally accountable. On the 30 June 2008 Lord Darzi's review report "High Quality Care For All" was published.

Healthcare for London

In 2007, before he started work on the national review, Lord Darzi had done the preliminary work on a review of services in London, which have also been subject to consultation. Healthcare for London proposed that NHS care should centre around eight spheres:

  • staying healthy
  • maternity and newborn care
  • children and young people
  • mental health
  • acute care
  • planned care
  • long-term conditions
  • end-of-life care

The MS Trust was very concerned at the complete absence of neurology, including MS services, from this model.
