Reproducibility of a fatigue management programme

University Hospital, Birmingham

Managing and treating MS related fatigue is a challenge, because there are limited treatment options with proven efficacy, and pharmaceutical agents have unpredictable effects. There is growing evidence that fatigue management programmes, that include energy effectiveness principles, would improve an individual's perception of their level of fatigue, as well as their quality of life.

The overall aim of this 3 year research study is to test whether a group fatigue management programme for people with MS previously developed for a pilot study at University Hospital, Birmingham will provide reproducible results when used in a further 8 centres throughout the United Kingdom. The 8 centres are in Birmingham, Newcastle, Grampian, Shropshire, Burton, Milton Keynes, Reading and Hertfordshire.

The hypothesis to be tested is 'Individuals who have completed the group fatigue management programme will report less fatigue, more satisfaction with performance and enhanced quality of life compared to those who do not receive the intervention, measured over two time points.'
