A comparison of treatment approaches to improve walking in people with MS
Rivermead Rehabilitation Centre, Oxford
The aim of this pilot study was to examine two physiotherapy treatment approaches to improve mobility or people with MS:
- a task-oriented, functional approach with exercises relating to walking. The theory underlying this treatment is based on the skill acquisition theory which describes the need to practice the task itself in order to improve the level of skill and achieve mastery of the task
- an approach based on reduction of impairments identified for an individual patient. The rationale for this approach requires the hands-on skills of a physiotherapist, in comparison with the first approach in which the patient receives verbal guidance from the therapist.
