Neuromuscular performance and electrical muscle stimulation in MS

MS Research Unit, Bristol Royal Infirmary

The use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) to assist movement in those paralysed by spinal injury has been under investigation for several years and recently commercial stimulation systems have become available. Work is now being carried out to assess the feasibility of similar systems for those disabled by MS. FES may also have uses with certain types of continence problems, and with respiration.

Work is ongoing though several papers have been published.
