Imipramine is an antidepressant. In MS, and other conditions, a low dose may be used for pain relief, particularly for neuropathic pain in the arms and legs, eg burning sensations, pins and needles or stabbing pains. It can also be used for some mild bladder symptoms.

How imipramine works

Imipramine belongs to the tricyclic class of antidepressants. It works by altering the way in which the central nervous system reacts to pain.

How imipramine is given

Imipramine is taken orally as tablets.

Side effects and contraindications

Side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, headache and increased appetite. Some side effects may ease off over time. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should seek a doctor's advice. People with a history of cardiovascular disease should also discuss this with their doctor before starting treatment.
