Product names

Maxtrex

Methotrexate is an immunosuppressant drug used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Studies have looked at low dose methotrexate as a treatment for progressive MS and found that it may have a role in slowing progression and helping with psychological symptoms in people with moderate disability.

How is methotrexate given?

Methotrexate is taken orally as tablets.

Side effects and contraindications

Methotrexate was well tolerated at the low doses used in research. Longer term use may be associated with serious side effects including lung and liver problems and the suppression of bone marrow.
