Leaving a gift in your will

Margaret Grebby

I have decided to remember the MS Trust in my will because I had such help from them following my diagnosis in 2004.

Why leave a gift to the MS Trust in your will?

Every week, fifty people in the UK are diagnosed with MS. A gift in your will could help us to provide them with the information and support they need to face a lifelong and uncertain journey.

Making a will

Making a will is the safest way to ensure that your wishes are carried out after you have passed away. By making a will you can ensure that your loved ones and the causes you care about are provided for. If you don't have an up to date will, the courts will have to administer your affairs after you die.

A will is a legal document and must comply with legal formalities. For this reason we strongly recommend that you ask a solicitor to help you write one. If you intend to leave a gift in your will to the MS Trust, we suggest you have the following wording to hand when speaking to your solicitor:

I give to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust of Spirella Building, Bridge Road, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, SG6 4ET, Registered Charity number 1088353, _________________ and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other authorised officer, shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge.

Finding a solicitor

George Ide LLP is a firm of solicitors which provides a will making service to supporters of the MS Trust. Prices start from £114.00 for a basic single will. This can be done online, through a telephone call or by visiting their office. George Ide will donate a percentage of their charge to the MS Trust. You do not have to leave a charitable gift in your will to use this service. To request a will-making pack with further information about this service, please call the MS Trust on 01462 476707 and ask to speak to Joanne or email fundraising@mstrust.org.uk.

George Ide LLP Solicitors are completely independent of the MS Trust. They can be contacted directly on 01243 831006, email paul.asling@georgeide.co.uk or visit their website.

Alternatively you can find a solicitor through the Law Society's website.

What if I have already made a will?

You can amend an existing will to include a gift to the MS Trust by asking your solicitor to add a codicil. To ensure that your intended gift does reach the MS Trust, we suggest you take the following wording to your solicitor:

I give to the Multiple Sclerosis Trust of Spirella Building, Bridge Road, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, SG6 4ET, Registered Charity number 1088353, _________________ and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other authorised officer, shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge.
