Application for research funding

The MS Trust awards research grants in line with one of its charitable objectives: "to relieve people with MS primarily by promoting or assisting in the promotion of research which has a patient-based approach and which is concerned with the clinical management of MS and the publication of the useful results of such research".

The research grant application is a two stage process.

Initially a researcher submits a preliminary proposal, which should be no more than two sides of A4 and the following information should be included:

  • Title of project
  • Name and qualifications of the researcher(s)
  • Aims and objectives
  • Background to the study
  • to include the rationale for the research, an indication of familiarity with the literature and other relevant research
  • Description of methods or research design
  • to include details of population to be studied, sample size, selection criteria and methods of data analysis
  • Timetable for the different stages of the research
  • Approximate breakdown of costs
  • Details of any staff to be employed and arrangements for research supervision
  • Ethical considerations of the study
  • Proposals for publication and dissemination

The MS Trust will respond to the preliminary proposal within, at most, 2 months.

Applicants whose preliminary application has been favourably received will be invited to complete the research grant application form. An invitation to submit a full research application does not mean that the project will be funded.

Once the form is submitted and any outstanding questions addressed, a decision will be reached within at most 3 months.
