Why I’m releasing a charity Christmas song for the MS Trust

Ruth Green is a singer from Letchworth Garden City and supporter of the MS Trust. This Christmas she will be releasing a song, Share Christmas with Someone, with all the money raised going towards our work supporting everyone affected by MS. This is Ruth’s story.

The MS Trust have been amazing for me. I know that if I have a question about my MS and how it’s affecting me, I can go to the MS Trust.

I was diagnosed with MS 27 years ago. When I was first diagnosed, I would fall over a lot and people kept thinking I was drunk. I was up one moment and down the next and it was alarming to me. Initially when the doctor told me I had MS, I was stunned, fearful, lost, not knowing who and where to turn to. Being a teenager with the condition seemed to be a battle of discovery, I wanted to study, have fun, go out with friends, but I had to learn very quickly how to cope with change.

Whilst on this road of the unknown, I remember what my mother used to say, “for every door that closes, there’s a little window that opens.” These few words have given me hope, to keep going and to strive forward. Life isn’t always a bed of roses, but equally I know it could be worse. I’ve got so much to be grateful for. I try to focus on what I can do rather than what I can’t and just take each day as it comes. MS doesn’t stop me. I still travel, I still laugh, I still sing, I still cry. I live life to the fullest.

My own experience inspired the song, Share Christmas with Someone. The loss of my mum and dad means that my Christmases have changed and not having them around brings a sadness. But I live on the memories that we shared and that inspires me and keeps me going. MS can make you feel that you’re in a lonely place too – I sometimes think that having MS is like losing a part of you – but with this song I wanted to show that you’re not alone and there is support out there, at Christmas and all year round.

I remember what my mother used to say, “for every door that closes, there’s a little window that opens.” These few words have given me hope, to keep going and to strive forward.

My advice to someone newly diagnosed with MS would be to try and look at the positives and to be optimistic about life. It is alarming, it is difficult to deal with and you do have hard days, but I just try and be grateful for everything. I would also say try to find a charity like the MS Trust to give you that advice and support.

The MS Trust have been amazing for me, which is why I wanted to release this song for them. It’s been so inspiring for me to know that they are always there when I need them. MS is such a complex condition, but I know that if I have a question about my MS and how it’s affecting me, I can go to the MS Trust. To ensure they continue to provide trusted information, fund MS nurses and advanced MS Champions, and support everyone affected by MS, I would encourage everyone to buy or download Share Christmas with Someone.
