Alprostadil is a treatment for erectile dysfunction, a symptom that can affect men with multiple sclerosis. It is sold under the brand name Caverject, Viridal Duo, Muse or Vitaros.
Alprostadil may be prescribed if drugs such as sildenafil (Viagra and similar) or tadalafil (Cialis and similar) are not effective. You may need to try several different drugs before you are able to try alprostadil.
Alprostadil is a synthetic form of prostaglandin, a naturally occurring chemical in the body. It works by causing your blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow. When alprostadil is administered to the penis the increased blood flow results in an erection.
Alprostadil can be applied:
- directly to the penis by injection (Caverject or Viridal Duo)
- as a cream that can be inserted with an applicator into the tip of the penis (Vitaros urethral cream)
- with an applicator stick that can be inserted into the tip of the penis (Muse urethral stick)
Side effects of Caverject and Viridal Duo can include pain in the penis or groin and bleeding in the tissue around the injection site. Less frequently, the erection may not subside for several hours. This is known as priapism and can be uncomfortable and, without medical attention, may result in tissue damage in the penis.
A side effect with Vitaros or Muse can be a burning feeling or irritation at the end of the penis. Your partner may also experience similar pain after penetrative sex. Oral sex should be avoided with a man using Vitaros or Muse. They should not be used if your partner is pregnant or breastfeeding.
